The Cleveland Browns’ star Defensive End, Myles Garrett has officially broken the NFL’s single season sack record today against the Cincinnati Bengals by sacking Quarterback Joe Burrow late in the final game of the season. Garrett finishes the season with an amazing 23 sacks! Just like any accomplishment, fans from other franchises have swarmed to social media to invalidate the record and say their guy is better for whatever reason. In turn, Browns fans try to bring in other stats and belittle the other franchises guy too. People need to just celebrate greatness and realize that Myles has the record, regardless if he had to play all the way to end of all the games. It doesn’t matter if it took him more games or less snaps. It doesn’t matter if a team built a game plan to keep him from it. That’s what all teams do in every sport when records are on the line.
We also need to stop belittling what TJ Watt did when he got 22.5 in 15 games. They play completely different positions. It’s really not an argument if you ask me. Watt is asked to do far more different things on the field than Myles is. 99% of the time in passing situations, Garrett is rushing after the Quarterback, because that’s his main job as a Defensive End. In those same situations, TJ Watt is asked to rush the passer sometimes, sit down and watch and protect the screen play, back-up and protect the flat, sometimes he has to drop into coverage and defend a TE, Slot WR, or RB coming across on crossing routes, and even at times has to run out and defend TE’s, Slot WR’s, or RB’s who rip the seam up field. Myles moves around pre-snap to try to find ways to the QB, and Watt moves around because he has to read and do all those other things.
So, congratulations to Myles Garrett for being the NFL record holder for most sacks in a single season. You earned it and it is your record, and your record alone. Let’s not belittle his greatness and his accomplishment, and let’s not belittle TJ Watt for what he’s done as well.
