The 2025 NFL regular season has come to an end. The last division winner and final playoff spot wasn’t determined until late into the night on Sunday night, but we got there. Some teams saw their hopes dashed from their own couch. Others rested players, and fell in the seedings. Either way, it was another important NFL weekend that fully shaped the upcoming playoffs.
On Saturday night the San Francisco 49ers played host to the Seattle Seahawks. It was the first of the massive matchups on the weekend. This one inparticular was for the #1 seed in the entire NFC, and for the NFC West Title. Seattle jumped out to the 1st quarter lead with a Charbonnet 27 yard TD. The Niners got their only points of the game in the 2nd quarter by way of a field goal to match the Seahawks field goal in the same quarter. The Seattle defense played one of their best games of the season when it mattered most. A 4th quarter Seahawks field goal sealed their win 13-3. The Seattle defense only gave up a total of 173 yards.
The AFC South was still up for grabs also on Sunday afternoon. The Jacksonville Jaguars made sure it wasn’t for long, and they did so in emphatic fashion. They played the lowly Tennessee Titans who lost Rookie Quarterback Cam Ward early in the game to injury. After that it was the bloodbath we thought it would be. The Jags scored 24 points alone in the 2nd quarter and demolished the Titans 41-7 on their way to the Division crown.
Another huge AFC matchup saw the Los Angeles Chargers head into Mile High to face the Denver Broncos. There was more on the line for the Broncos, and it showed as LA sat star QB Justin Herbert for this one as they already clinched a Wild Card spot and wanted him as healthy as possible for that playoff run. For Denver, who are the AFC West champs, it was about capturing that #1 seed in the entire AFC so they could solidfiy a first round bye and home field throughout. In a game that saw one touchdown, which happened to be a Pick-6 by the Denver defense, it was another defensive battle by both teams. The Chargers only mustered one field goal and gave up the TD and 4 field goals themselves, which saw Denver snatch that one-seed with a hard fought 19-3 victory.
The game of the weekend just happened to be the final regular season game of the entire year for the NFL. On the Sunday Night Football Game of the Week, the Baltimore Ravens went to Pittsburgh to face the rival Steelers. This game was for everything for these teams. It was winner-take-all for the AFC North and the final playoff spot that comes with it. It just might have also been the game of the year in the NFL. A back and forth battle gave us just a little taste in the first half. In the first quarter Lamar Jackson found Walker from 38 yards out to put the Ravens up 7-0. The two teams traded field goals in the second quarter and went to half with Baltimore up 10-3. The Steelers came right out in the second half and drove down the field taking up 6:23 before a 1-yard TD run tied it up at 10. Pittsburgh finished up the third quarter with a field goal to take a 13-10 lead into the final quarter. Then the insanity began. Lamar Jackson hit Zay Flowers for a 50 touchdown catch to go up 17-13. Aaron Rodgers orchestrated another great drive before Gainwell ran it in from 2-yards out to regain the lead 20-17. We go right back to Lamar Jackson who hit Zay Flowers for a second time, but this time from 64 yards out, and now Baltimore is back up 24-20. Here comes ANOTHER Aaron Rodgers drive as he hit Austin from 26 yards out, and importantly, Boswell missted the extra point, but the Steelers had a 26-24 lead with :55 seconds remaining in the ballgame. It’s Lamar Jackson’s turn, with just a field goal needed to win the whole thing. He drove them down the field and got into field goal range. With :02 seconds left, Tyler Loop came in to attempt a 44-yard game winning, division winning, playoff spot winning field goal. He pushed it right and missed as time expired, Steelers win and become the AFC North Champions who will face the Houston Texans in the Wild Card round in Pittsburgh next week. That fourth quarter was insane, but such an amazing way to end the regular season! Wow!
Notable Notes:
- Cleveland Browns star Defensive End Myles Garrett set the NFL single season sack record late in their final game against the Cincinnati Bengals for number 23. He brought down Joe Burrow for the record. Their Head Coach Kevin Stefanski has also been fired as of Monday morning.
- The Tampa Bay Buccaneers defeated the Carolina Panthers 16-14 on Saturday, but it didn’t matter as the Atlanta Falcons beat the New Orleans Saints on Sunday to hand Carolina the NFC South title.
- The Houston Texans beat a pesky Indianapolis Colts team who started Rookie QB Riley Leonard. It was more of a shootout than anyone expected, but the Texans win 38-30, and head into the playoffs with a 9-game winning streak.
